It’s my sad duty to announce that Eldon Leisure Chess Club have chosen not to resume activities following the summer break.
Our records do not date back nearly far enough to establish when the club formerly known as Newcastle YMCA first joined the Northumbria League. They have been champions of the 1st Division on at least nine occasions, most recently in 1994-95.
Their small squad of players was competitive until the end, and I understand venue difficulties played a big part in their decision to bow out with dignity.
Pending confirmation by the League Meeting, their place in the 1st Division has been inherited by the 2nd Division bronze medallists Tynemouth Castles.
In happier news, Newcastle University Chess Club are making a comeback under the illustrious stewardship of Lateefah Messam-Sparks, one of the top British women of her generation and winner of all sorts of events national and international. Bar Loco on Leazes Park Road have the new club pencilled in for Tuesday nights, but watch this space…
